La denominación “español de América” supone un conjunto de variedades dialectales habladas en el continente americano, en contraposición al español peninsular. Por su parte, el término “americanismo” designa, desde una perspectiva lingüística, tanto a un rasgo procedente de alguna lengua amerindia como a una particularidad del español hablado en este continente.

Estas designaciones, sin embargo, no están exentas de valoraciones emergentes de imaginarios lingüísticos que reproducen jerarquías entre las variedades y sitúan a las americanas, consideradas en su conjunto, en una posición de menor prestigio en relación con la norma peninsular.

Esta obra examina desde diferentes enfoques algunos aspectos que caracterizan al español americano y estudia las ideologías lingüísticas subyacentes en las percepciones sobre este conjunto de variedades, enriqueciendo las reflexiones acerca del espacio reservado a la diversidad lingüística en el mundo hispanohablante.

Americanisms: Reflections on the Place of Latin American Spanish in the Hispanic World

Abstract
The term “Spanish of the Americas” refers to a set of dialectal varieties spoken on the American continent, in contrast to Peninsular Spanish. Meanwhile, the term “Americanism” denotes, from a linguistic perspective, both a feature derived from an Amerindian language and a particularity of the Spanish spoken on this continent.

These terms, however, are not free from value judgments arising from linguistic imaginaries that reproduce hierarchies among varieties, placing American varieties, considered as a whole, in a position of lower prestige compared to the Peninsular norm.

This work examines, from different approaches, certain aspects that characterize Latin American Spanish and studies the linguistic ideologies underlying perceptions of this set of varieties, thereby enriching reflections on the space reserved for linguistic diversity in the Spanish-speaking world.
